Tollgate Takedown: Nasarawa State Assembly Tackles Abuja-Makurdi Gridlock Head-On
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has expressed significant concern over the severe traffic congestion and associated hardships resulting from the recent implementation of tolling on the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi road.
This tolling initiative is part of the Federal Government’s strategy to repay a $460.8 million loan secured from the China Exim Bank for the road’s rehabilitation and upgrade.
During a session held in Lafia on Monday, the Assembly urged the tollgate management to consider reducing the toll fees to a more affordable rate and to facilitate cash payment options. The lawmakers emphasized that if these adjustments are not made promptly, they may advocate for the suspension of toll operations within the state.
Speaker Danladi Jatau highlighted the pressing nature of the issue, stating, “Our people are suffering due to the payment system at the toll gates.” He called upon Governor Abdullahi Sule to engage with the Federal Ministry of Works to address these concerns.
The Assembly proposed that toll tickets be made available at designated motor parks and other accessible locations to streamline the payment process. Additionally, they recommended the introduction of alternative payment methods for individuals who do not possess ATM cards, ensuring inclusivity and ease of access.
A significant point of contention is the current multiple-payment system along the route. The Assembly advocated for a unified, one-time toll fee to replace the existing structure, which requires motorists to make several payments at different points. Speaker Jatau emphasized, “A one-time toll fee should be introduced instead of multiple payments at different points along the route.”
The Assembly’s concerns were further underscored by a recent incident where a woman reportedly gave birth at the tollgate due to delays caused by the inefficient payment system. This event highlights the urgent need for a more streamlined and effective toll collection process to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The lawmakers collectively expressed their dissatisfaction with the current tolling system’s impact on road users. They unanimously called for a reduction in toll fees and the implementation of a single-payment system to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure a more efficient process.
While acknowledging the challenges, Speaker Jatau commended President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Ministry of Works for their ongoing infrastructure development efforts. He also praised Governor Abdullahi Sule for his dedication to the state’s progress.
The Assembly’s proactive stance reflects a commitment to addressing the immediate concerns of Nasarawa State’s residents. By advocating for these changes, the lawmakers aim to mitigate the adverse effects of the tolling system and enhance the overall well-being of the state’s populace.
