NYSC Withdraws Corps Members from Mbaa Community in Benue

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has evacuated all corps members from Mbaa community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State after a violent assault by suspected armed herders resulted in the deaths of over 20 residents, including 16 farmers whose bodies were discovered in the River Katsina-Ala.

In a statement released on Thursday, Yahuza Adamu, the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC Benue, confirmed the withdrawal, citing the persistent attacks on the community, which shares a border with the Republic of Cameroon. Adamu emphasized the organization’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its members, assuring parents and guardians of ongoing collaboration with security agencies to ensure their protection.

“Since the onset of incessant attacks on Mbaa Community, NYSC withdrew all corps members from the area and has not posted any there to date,” Adamu stated. He further noted that a headcount conducted by the NYSC Kwande Local Government Inspector verified that all corps members in the region are safe and accounted for. Those serving in Jato Aka Turan, a location distant from the affected area, are reportedly not exposed to any security threats.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence affecting NYSC deployments in various regions. In December 2024, the NYSC withdrew corps members from Government Day Secondary School in Kulende, Ilorin, Kwara State, following an alleged assault on a female corps member by local teachers.

 Similarly, in June 2019, corps members were retracted from areas in Niger State plagued by bandit attacks to safeguard their well-being.
