Gunmen Storm Delta Church, Shoot Pastor, Abduct Six Worshippers
A tranquil vigil at Elyon Paradise Ministry in Asagba Ogwashi, Delta State, was violently disrupted when armed assailants stormed the church premises. The Gunmen shot the presiding pastor, Apostle Divine Omodia, severing two of his fingers, and abducted six congregants. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. during a night vigil near Delta State Polytechnic in the Aniocha South Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the gunmen infiltrated the church and unleashed gunfire, causing chaos among the worshippers. Pastor Faith Omodia, the pastor’s wife, vividly recalled the terrifying moments: “I was lying down with my baby in the church hall when I heard gunshots. Suddenly, bullets started flying inside the auditorium.” She further detailed that her husband was shot in the lap and lost two fingers during the assault.
The assailants forcibly gathered the congregants, leading six individuals, including two security guards, away to an undisclosed location. The abducted persons have been identified as Helen Onwuamaeze, Ariyo Emmanuel, Chike Okolo, and Blessing Waye, along with the two unnamed security personnel. As of now, the kidnappers have not made any contact or ransom demands, leaving families and the community in a state of anguish and uncertainty.
Apostle Divine Omodia was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility, where he is currently receiving intensive treatment. Medical professionals are working diligently to stabilize his condition, addressing the severe injuries sustained from the gunshot wound and the traumatic amputation of his fingers. The congregation and local residents are fervently praying for his swift recovery.
In response to the attack by the Gunmen, the Delta State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators. Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, stating that a rescue team has been deployed and is actively pursuing leads in the surrounding areas. However, he also noted that no formal report had been filed at any police station regarding the attack, which may impede the investigation’s progress.
