Governor Umo Demands Urgent Military Presence in Akwa Ibom’s Coastal Region
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has reiterated his call for the establishment of an Army battalion along the Oron-Urueffiong Oruko axis to address escalating security concerns in the state’s coastal regions. This renewed appeal was made during a courtesy visit by Major General Eric Emekah, the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, to the Governor’s office on Tuesday.
The Governor recalled his initial request during a previous visit by the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, during the 2024 Chief of Army Staff Conference held in the state. He emphasized the strategic importance of positioning a battalion in the Oron-Urueffiong Oruko area to curb criminal activities along the waterways. Governor Eno expressed hope that Major General Emekah would advance this initiative, stating, “I believe you can now help us achieve this.”
Governor umo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of Akwa Ibom’s residents. He acknowledged the critical role these agencies play in maintaining peace and security, pledging continued assistance to enhance their operational effectiveness.
In response, Major General Emekah commended Governor Eno for his unwavering support of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. He acknowledged the Governor’s contributions to the Army, particularly the 2 Brigade, which has been a primary beneficiary of the state’s hospitality and support. Major General Emekah assured the Governor of the Army’s dedication to collaborating with the state government to bolster security measures in the region.
The strategic location of the Oron-Urueffiong Oruko axis, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and serving as a gateway to neighboring countries, has made it susceptible to criminal activities such as kidnappings and sea piracy. The establishment of a dedicated Army battalion in this area is anticipated to enhance surveillance and response capabilities, thereby deterring criminal elements and safeguarding the lives and property of residents.
This development underscores the ongoing efforts by the Akwa Ibom State government to strengthen its security architecture in collaboration with federal agencies.
