EFCC Arrests 59 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Abuja Crackdown

Crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained 59 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in Abuja. This operation underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to combating financial crimes and cyber-related offenses within Nigeria.

The arrests were executed following actionable intelligence that led operatives to various locations across the Federal Capital Territory. The suspects are alleged to have been involved in schemes defrauding individuals and organizations through various online platforms. Items recovered during the operation include numerous mobile devices, laptops, and several luxury vehicles believed to have been procured through illicit activities.

The EFCC has been intensifying its efforts against internet fraud, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo” in local parlance. This recent operation is part of a broader strategy to identify, apprehend, and prosecute individuals perpetrating cyber fraud. The agency emphasizes the importance of collaborative intelligence and urges citizens to report suspicious activities to aid in the fight against cybercrime.

In a related development, the EFCC had previously arrested 105 individuals, including four Chinese nationals, for their alleged involvement in an internet fraud scheme targeting hotels in Europe and other regions. These arrests were made during a raid on an apartment in Abuja, where the suspects were believed to be operating a hotel review job scam. Investigations are ongoing, and the individuals will face trial upon the conclusion of these inquiries.

The agency’s relentless pursuit of cybercriminals has led to multiple arrests in recent times. On May 8, 2024, the EFCC apprehended 29 suspected internet fraudsters in the Apo, Gwarimpa, and Katampe areas of Abuja. Items seized during this operation included 43 mobile phones of different makes, six vehicles, and two smartwatches. Similarly, on October 29, 2024, seven suspects were arrested in the Kubwa axis of the Federal Capital Territory, with 13 phones and one car recovered.

The EFCC’s Acting Chairman has reiterated the agency’s dedication to eradicating cybercrime, stating that these operations serve as a warning to individuals involved in such illicit activities. He emphasized that the commission will continue to deploy all necessary resources to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

As cybercrime continues to evolve, the EFCC calls on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activities. The agency also encourages parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their wards, as many young individuals are increasingly being lured into cybercrime with promises of quick wealth.
