Explosion Hits Zamfara Market, Over 50 Injured
A devastating explosion occurred at the Talata Mafara Central Market in Zamfara State, leading to multiple casualties and numerous injuries. The incident has been attributed to a gunpowder explosion within a section of the market known for the sale of locally fabricated firearms.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion took place around 11:30 a.m., causing widespread panic as traders and shoppers scrambled for safety. The blast originated from a shop dealing in locally made guns, where a firearm accidentally discharged, igniting nearby gunpowder and triggering a massive fire.
One trader recounted, “We heard a loud bang, and then fire spread rapidly across the market. People ran in different directions, but many were caught in the flames.”
The immediate aftermath saw over 50 individuals sustaining varying degrees of injuries, with some reports indicating severe burns among the victims. Initial medical response was provided by the General Hospital in Talata Mafara; however, due to limited facilities, many patients were transferred to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto for advanced care
. A medical worker at the General Hospital, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated, “We received many victims, some with first-degree burns, but due to a lack of space and resources, we had to refer several others to Sokoto.”
Tragically, two of the victims, identified as Muhammad Lawal Matusgi and Sani Adamu Kanarkalgo, succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment in Sokoto. The explosion not only caused loss of life and injuries but also led to significant property damage within the market, affecting the livelihoods of numerous traders.
In response to the explosion incident, the Chairman of Talata Mafara Local Government Area, Yahaya Yari, announced an immediate ban on the sale of locally made firearms within the market. He emphasized the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future and has directed the Divisional Police Officer of Talata Mafara to enforce the ban effectively.
Yari remarked, “This is not the first time it is happening; it has happened twice before today. I have announced a ban on sales of locally made guns in the market by the local blacksmiths. We cannot continue to experience this type of tragedy.”
The Zamfara State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the cause of the explosion. While a dane gun was recovered at the scene, no arrests have been made, as it is believed that the individual responsible may be among the casualties. The police have assured the public of a thorough inquiry to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident and to implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the inherent dangers associated with the sale and handling of locally fabricated firearms in public markets. Community leaders and stakeholders are calling for increased regulation and oversight to ensure the safety of traders and patrons, as well as to preserve public peace and order.
