Lagos-Badagry Expressway auto-crash Claims Life

A tragic accident unfolded on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, casting a somber shadow over the bustling thoroughfare. The incident occurred near the Jackos Filling Station, close to Ola Oki Hospital, involving a commercial truck, a Bajaj motorcycle, and a Lexus SUV.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the collision resulted in the loss of two lives and left several others injured.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing how the commercial truck, bearing registration number AAA 541 YL, veered uncontrollably before colliding with the motorcycle, which lacked a registration plate. The impact was devastating, leading to a chain reaction that involved the Lexus SUV with registration number BDG 428 DW. In total, ten individuals were affected: eight men and two women.

Tragically, one adult male and one adult female lost their lives on the spot. Two others sustained serious injuries and were promptly transported to Ola Oki Hospital for medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were subsequently released to their grieving families.

The Lagos-Badagry Expressway has long been a critical artery, facilitating movement between Nigeria and neighboring West African countries. However, its history is marred by frequent accidents, often attributed to a combination of factors such as over-speeding, reckless driving, and the road’s varying conditions.

In recent years, there have been concerted efforts to reconstruct and expand portions of the expressway to accommodate increasing traffic and enhance safety.

Despite these improvements, the FRSC has observed a concerning rise in accident rates post-reconstruction. Between January and June 2022, the accident rate reportedly increased by 500% compared to the same period in 2021. This surge has been largely attributed to drivers taking advantage of improved road conditions to engage in excessive speeding and other reckless behaviors.

In response to the recent tragedy, FRSC officials swiftly arrived at the scene to manage traffic and initiate an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed and possible mechanical failure of the truck may have contributed to the collision. The FRSC has reiterated its call for motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition before embarking on journeys.

Local residents and commuters have expressed deep concern over the recurring accidents on this vital expressway. Many have called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and the implementation of additional safety measures, such as the installation of speed cameras and regular roadworthiness inspections. There is also an appeal for continuous public awareness campaigns to educate drivers on the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of road safety.
