Lassa Fever Hits Benue: Government Confirms Three Deaths, Issues Urgent Warning
The Benue State government has officially declared an outbreak of Lassa fever, reporting three fatalities among five confirmed cases from 40 suspected infections. Dr. Yanmar Otese, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, announced this development in Makurdi, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated action to contain the disease.
In response to the outbreak, the state has conducted a comprehensive risk analysis, leading to the official declaration. Health authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant for symptoms such as high fever, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and unexplained bleeding, as early detection is critical for effective treatment. Dr. Otese assured the public that efforts are underway to curb the spread and protect communities. To bolster containment efforts, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), has deployed a 10-member national rapid response team to Benue State. All suspected cases are being treated in strict isolation at designated centers to ensure timely care and prevent further transmission. Additionally, an intensified rodent control initiative has been launched, encompassing community cleanup campaigns and environmental sanitation efforts. Residents are encouraged to store food in sealed containers and maintain hygiene within and around their homes.
This recent outbreak in Benue State contributes to the broader national concern, as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported 80 deaths from 413 confirmed Lassa fever cases across 11 states during Epidemiological Week 6 (February 3–9, 2025). The case fatality rate has risen to 19.4%, up from 17.5% during the same period in 2024. Notably, 73% of confirmed cases originated from Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states.
In 2024, Benue State recorded 63 Lassa fever cases with 11 deaths, marking a 17% case fatality rate. The state has made progress in combating Lassa fever compared to previous years, but continued vigilance and training are essential.
