Nigerian Senate Investigates Alleged Cameroonian Annexation of Border Territories

The Nigerian Senate has initiated an investigation into reports of the Republic of Cameroon allegedly annexing territories within Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. This action follows concerns about the encroachment on Nigerian mangrove islands and maritime areas, particularly around Efiat in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The alleged annexation has significant economic ramifications, notably the potential loss of over 2,560 oil wells and associated gas revenues that would otherwise contribute to Nigeria’s economy. Senator Bassey emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue to prevent further economic losses.

In reaction to these allegations, the Senate has established an ad hoc committee to conduct a thorough investigation. The committee, chaired by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, includes members from various geopolitical zones, reflecting the national importance of the issue. The current allegations do not pertain to territories addressed in the ICJ ruling, highlighting the need for renewed diplomatic engagement to resolve these emerging disputes.
