Nigerian Senate Investigates Alleged Cameroonian Annexation of Border Territories
The Nigerian Senate has initiated an investigation into reports of the Republic of Cameroon allegedly annexing territories within Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. This action follows concerns about the encroachment on Nigerian mangrove islands and maritime areas, particularly around Efiat in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The alleged annexation has significant economic ramifications, notably the potential loss of over 2,560 oil wells and associated gas revenues that would otherwise contribute to Nigeria’s economy. Senator Bassey emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue to prevent further economic losses.
In reaction to these allegations, the Senate has established an ad hoc committee to conduct a thorough investigation. The committee, chaired by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, includes members from various geopolitical zones, reflecting the national importance of the issue. The committee has been granted a four-week period to present its findings and recommendations.
During the plenary session, senators expressed deep concern over the alleged territorial infringements. Senate President Godswill Akpabio underscored the necessity for a diplomatic resolution, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to engage with Cameroonian authorities to uphold Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
This situation is reminiscent of past territorial disputes between Nigeria and Cameroon, notably the Bakassi Peninsula conflict, which was adjudicated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2002. The current allegations do not pertain to territories addressed in the ICJ ruling, highlighting the need for renewed diplomatic engagement to resolve these emerging disputes.
The Senate’s proactive stance reflects a commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial and economic interests. The outcome of the ad hoc committee’s investigation is anticipated to guide subsequent actions, including potential diplomatic negotiations, to ensure the protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty and resources.
The allegations of Cameroonian annexation of Nigerian territories have prompted a decisive response from the Senate, emphasizing the importance of territorial integrity and economic sovereignty. The findings of the Senate’s investigation will be crucial in determining the next steps to address this pressing issue.
