Police Caught Beating Delta Polytechnic SUG President Over ₦500 Bribe Refusal
Officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Ogwashi-Uku division were captured on video assaulting the President of the Student Union Government (SUG) at Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku. The altercation reportedly stemmed from the SUG President’s refusal to comply with a demand for a ₦500 bribe.
The video, which has since gone viral, depicts the SUG President confronting the officers after allegedly being slapped for declining their monetary request. Visibly agitated, he documents the encounter, stating, “You slapped me because I refused to settle you. You will see what you have never seen in your life before.” As tensions escalated, the officers retreated to their patrol vehicle, with one discharging a firearm into the air as they departed the scene.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Delta State Police Command were initially unproductive, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, did not respond to direct inquiries. However, SP Edafe later addressed the incident on his social media platform, acknowledging the commencement of an investigation. He noted that while the allegation of the ₦500 bribe is under scrutiny, the officer accused of physical assault has been detained. SP Edafe also highlighted the SUG President’s confrontational demeanor during the encounter, emphasizing the need for mutual respect between law enforcement and the public.
This event has ignited widespread condemnation from various student bodies and civil rights organizations. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) released a statement expressing deep concern over the recurrent incidents of police misconduct, particularly towards students. NANS called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation, urging that any officers found culpable face appropriate disciplinary actions.
Historically, Delta State Polytechnic has grappled with tensions between its student body and local law enforcement. In August 2018, the institution’s Student Union Government elections were marred by violence when suspected thugs disrupted the process, resulting in injuries to six students. Similarly, in November 2024, the Students’ Union Government of Delta State University, Abraka, demanded the immediate removal of the Abraka Divisional Police Officer over allegations of brutality, extortion, and unprofessional conduct.
