Suspected Human Trafficker Apprehended in Sokoto; Two Libya-Bound Women Rescued

Illela, Sokoto State – In a significant operation aimed at curbing human trafficking, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Illela Border Command, has arrested a suspected trafficker, identified as Sirajo Illela. The operation also led to the rescue of two female victims who were reportedly en route to Libya.

The Comptroller of the command, Mr. Tony Akuneme, disclosed this development in a statement released by the Command Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Mohammed, on Wednesday in Abuja. According to the statement, the arrest was executed at Illela’s residence, following intelligence reports about his alleged involvement in human trafficking activities.

The rescued victims, whose identities have been withheld for security reasons, are currently receiving care and assistance. Preliminary investigations suggest that they were being transported to Libya for purposes yet to be fully ascertained.

This incident underscores the persistent challenge of human trafficking in Nigeria, particularly in border regions. The NIS has intensified its efforts to combat this menace, focusing on surveillance and intelligence gathering to apprehend traffickers and rescue victims.

In a related development, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has raised concerns over the widespread nature of human trafficking and irregular migration, describing it as endemic across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

The agency has been collaborating with various security agencies, including the NIS, to strengthen border security and implement measures aimed at preventing trafficking activities.

The arrest of Sirajo Illela and the rescue of the two women highlight the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to tackle human trafficking. However, the prevalence of such cases indicates the need for sustained vigilance and comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of trafficking and protect vulnerable populations.
