Heartbreak in Ibadan as Renowned Talking Drummer Baba Onilu Passes away
Renowned Ibadan drummer Ayangbenle, affectionately known as ‘Baba Onilu,’ has passed away. His son confirmed that he died overnight, with his final words being “La Ilaaha Ila lahu.”
A native of Ede in Osun State, Ayangbenle was celebrated for his drumming prowess, particularly during the Osun Osogbo festival. He also performed at University of Ibadan convocations and entertained corps members in Ibadan.
In April 2022, Ayangbenle gained widespread attention when Adisa Olashile, a corps member and photographer, captured his portraits. Olashile minted these images as NFTs on OpenSea, selling them for 0.3 Ethereum each, approximately one million naira at the time. He generously shared 50% of the proceeds with Ayangbenle, who was deeply moved by the gesture.
Reflecting on his craft, Ayangbenle once shared that he inherited his drumming skills from his father and began his career in Ibadan.
The passing of ‘Baba Onilu’ marks the end of an era for traditional drumming in Ibadan. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and cultural enthusiasts.
