Three injured, One missing and One dead: Akwa Ibom-Abia Boundary

The protracted boundary dispute between Ariam in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State and Ikot Okum in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has intensified, leading to the death of one individual, the disappearance of another, and injuries to three persons. The Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed these developments, noting that the deceased was from Abia State, while the missing individual and the injured parties hailed from Akwa Ibom State. She stated, “Yes, it is a boundary clash between Ikwuano Local Government Area and Obot Akara Local Council in Akwa Ibom State. One person from Ikot Okum is currently missing. Investigation is ongoing to arrest the perpetrators.”

The conflict encompasses six Akwa Ibom villages: Abama, Ikot Okum, Esa Ikwen, Nto Ndang, Utu Ikot Inyang, and Utu Otong. According to local sources, tensions escalated in December 2024 when an individual from Abama was allegedly assaulted by armed men from Ariam while harvesting cassava on his farm. In retaliation, residents from the six villages reportedly organized an attack, resulting in the death of a person from Ariam. An eyewitness from Abama, who requested anonymity, claimed that the Ariam community attempted to destroy a stream that serves as the natural boundary between the communities. The witness emphasized the need for governmental intervention, stating, “The government needs to step in and address this problem.”

This recent violence is part of a longstanding boundary dispute between Abia and Akwa Ibom States. The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has been actively involved in efforts to resolve the conflict. In a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja, the Director-General of the NBC, Surv. Adamu Adaji, called for peace and collaboration between the affected communities. He acknowledged the complexities involved in resolving the decades-long dispute and highlighted the NBC’s commitment to creating a harmonious solution that respects historical and legal boundaries while prioritizing the safety and development of border communities.

The Deputy Governors of both states have also expressed concerns over the escalating hostilities. Akwa Ibom’s Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi, reported attacks, abductions, and encroachments faced by residents of Ini Local Government Area from neighboring communities in Abia State, resulting in tragic losses in recent weeks. She underscored the urgent need for peace but warned that Akwa Ibom State would not permit further encroachment on its territory. Similarly, Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, expressed regret over the longstanding crisis and the resources it has drained, reaffirming Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti’s commitment to ending the dispute to foster a better business climate in the region.

The NBC has emphasized the importance of political will and community cooperation in resolving the dispute. The Director-General highlighted the NBC’s determination to achieve a peaceful and definitive settlement, urging all parties to confront the facts and work towards a harmonious solution.

As investigations continue and efforts to mediate the conflict persist, the affected communities remain in a state of tension, awaiting a resolution that will bring lasting peace to the region.
